What We Do

The focus of the Appalachian Women’s Museum is to restore the Monteith Farmstead in order to house the collection and stories of the extraordinary women in the cultural and natural history of western North Carolina.

The Monteith Farmstead is located in the town of Dillsboro, North Carolina. According to Ted Alexander, Regional Director of the Southwest Office of Preservation North Carolina, the site is one of the best preserved examples of a mountain farmstead in the western part of the state. The farmstead was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

We are a volunteer board who relies on donations, grants, fundraising, and volunteer work to achieve our goals.  Much has been accomplished toward restoring the 108 year old farmhouse and outbuildings. With a new wrap-around porch, roof, both inside and outside painting, and some preliminary exhibits we are now able to open the doors to the public.

The AWM Board of Directors strongly believe we must honor and protect our heritage, not only by preserving buildings and placing artifacts in museums, but also by creating an interactive, live reenactment of what life was like for those who came before us. Please consider supporting this effort through a donation or volunteering.
