What We Do

The Monteith Farmstead is located in Dillsboro, North Carolina. According to Ted Alexander, Regional Director of the Southwest Office of Preservation North Carolina, the site is one of the best preserved examples of a mountain farmstead in the western part of the state. The farmstead was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The Appalachian Women’s Museum acts as the stewards of the over 100-year-old house and the surrounding buildings and grounds of the Monteith Farmstead.

We are a volunteer board, including one part-time House Manager, that relies on donations, grants, fundraising, and volunteer work to achieve our mission of collecting, preserving and sharing the stories of Southern Appalachian Women past, present, and future. The first phase of the AWM was to restore the farmstead to safety welcome visitors. We have accomplished that goal by clearing the house and rehabilitating the wrap-around porch, roof, painting inside and out, and reconnecting the plumbing. In 2025, we are continuing updates and maintenance by insulating the house and repairing the electricity. We are in an exciting time, deciding the next phase for the organization and the farmstead as a museum, cultural space and community center.

The AWM Board of Directors strongly believes we must honor and protect our history by preserving buildings and creating exhibits, as well as interacting with the community and providing educational programming with partners throughout the region. Please consider supporting this effort through a donation or volunteering.
